Unity Sanctuary
Welcome to Unity Sanctuary, a place of sound and light healing designed for BRCvr, one of eight Burning Man Multiverses. Inspired by Chinese lanterns, Unity Sanctuary is a large-scale, occupiable sculpture where art, culture, and technology merge to create an immersive healing experience.
The sanctuary consists of eight rooms encircling a larger hall, each containing an artistic altar rooted in cultural and religious aesthetics, as well as the nine elements from Earth to Heaven. The mélange of different aesthetics allows seekers to find something familiar from their own lives, opening their minds to the healing power of sound and light as they connect with the space around them.
A collaborative effort between the artist collective #ChineseBeyondBorders, architect Earl Sheldon of #NtropeMultiMedia, and artist Brian Krawitz of #EnlighteningConcepts, Unity Sanctuary evolved from Earl’s initial concept of a habitable lantern. Brian further developed and brought this vision to life in the VR world, integrating his large-scale interactive sculptures into the digital realm.
The large lantern on the ground houses Life Within Itself, a memorial sculpture Brian brought to the Playa in 2017 in honor of his father. Its design of hexagons within hexagons represents an abstraction of the Fibonacci sequence.
The eight smaller lanterns serve as sound and light healing rooms, each featuring a unique altar. The first in this series, The Fountain of Pon Lai: The Path of Flow, is inspired by Brian’s wife and represents Chinese culture. Its design is based on the Bagua, which is used in feng shui and fortune-telling, and the accompanying soundscape features a Buddhist chant recited by Tina’s close friend, Mian Mian—once known as the “bad girl of literature” for her provocative writing in 1990s China, now a born-again Buddhist.
A version of this sculpture was part of an exhibit Brian helped create with the Brain Tech group from UC Berkeley, presented at the Exploratorium Science Center in San Francisco. He used a Muse EEG headset and a Raspberry Pi microcomputer to create an interactive lighting sequence on the sculpture. By solving a puzzle, participants could use their brain activity to gradually light up the piece.
The sanctuary also introduces the first Virtual Lantern Girl, The Empress of Solitude, part of the Chinese Beyond Borders wearable sculpture collection, #TheLanternGirls. This virtual avatar, modeled and rigged by Luminosity, is designed to interact with the sanctuary using an EEG headset, creating a dynamic lighting sequence between herself and the altar. This symbolizes light flowing from the heavens, through the Empress, into the altar, and finally to the people—where healing begins.

Unity Sanctuary was originally created in 2020 by Brian Krawitz during the pandemic as a special space for both himself and Tina Liu, to celebrate their wedding anniversary—as they were married at Burning Man but were unable to attend that year due to global lockdowns. It also became an opportunity to share their creative expression and connect with the community, something deeply meaningful to both of them. The overwhelming excitement and engagement from visitors quickly made UNITY Sanctuary a popular world on the social VR platform Altspace. Inspired by its success, Brian created a weekly meetup called Virtual Conversations for Content Creators, where participants could celebrate creative expression, showcase their projects, and receive mentorship through storytelling. The event became a space for guiding and inspiring anyone interested in pursuing creative work.
Although Altspace was sunsetted in 2023, the Discord server remains active, with nearly 200 members, continuing the mission of fostering creative collaboration and mentorship.
